A Point from pastor

SOME EVENTS of NOTE THESE DAYS....

Ladies tonight:   There is a movie night tonight at Kathy Lane's house.    11809 S 224th ST, Gretna.   This begins at 6:30am.  The gals are watching "War Room."  Bring a snack to share.  You might consider inviting a friend.

Men Saturday morning:  The men have their annual "advance" on Saturday morning.  You might consider inviting a friend.    This will begin at 7am and finish between 8:30 and 9am.

TLT (teen life truths)  begin Wednesday night...for 6th graders and older.  We highly encourage your youth to attend this if they have not (some will go through a second time, the teaching is that good).  This will be Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:15pm - YES, it does take them out of youth group during that time... they may still have a few moments some weeks at the end to join back up to LIGHThouse.

Annual Meeting is less than three weeks away.  Members will vote on elders, assistant treasurer, and the 2024 budget.  This is also a time where we gather to consider the past year and look ahead.   We open with pizza at 5:30 and the meeting starts just after 6pm.

Summit reminder ...   This nearly 2-week long summer conference is designed to equip students ages 16-22 to defend, own, and live out a Biblical Worldview.  SSB recommends those going into or coming out of their senior year of high school attend (and we will help with the cost).    Visit Summit's webpage to learn more and register.   The dates typically all fill up!

Today marks 51 years since Roe v. Wade.    Even with it being overturned, abortion continues to be a stain on the United States.  It will be a key argument in this year's election.   As long as we continue to allow for the sixth commandment to be celebrated and legalized, we must pray, speak, and fight for these lives.

the Lord's day

We continue to pray for Israel.  We noted the 100-days since 10/7 when Israel was attacked by Hamas.   Last night we had Dr. Mark Christian in to share about his background and the dangers Islam faces to each of us.  We are under attack even if we don't always realize it.  We need to be diligent in defending the gospel and we should pray for missionaries to be raised to share the gospel with those lost in darkness.

The message Sunday morning from 1 John chapter 5 warned us of an enemy of faith that we deal with: sinful fear.   We also spoke of God's love being the remedy (1 John 4:17-18).  We need to know Christ (be truly saved) to counter sinful fear.   Some other suggestions on God's love as a remedy for fear:    We should embrace the grace of God (study it to know it solidly).  We should recall God's faithfulness to us in the past.  We must manage our thoughts.  And we should fear God.

BIG Words

Docetism

See Gal. 4:4; 1 Tim. 3:16; 1 John 4:2.  This is one of the earliest Christian false doctrines.  Docetism is the belief that Jesus only appeared to have a physical body.  Thus, Jesus was not fully human.  The origination of this came from believing that if Christ suffered, He was not divine and if He was God, that He could not suffer.  This became a part of the Gnostic thinking (seeing Jesus as one outside our world and untainted by the physical).  Our challenge today is not different from early Christians.  We must defend who Christ is.  What does God’s Word say about Jesus.  Let us not make Him into a God of our own image.  As one writer wrote, “our culture’s problem is not with Jesus as a good man, a prophet, a teacher, or even as a deity.  It’s with Jesus’s primary claim, that he is Lord.”  Don’t fall for Docetism or let Jesus be anything less than Lord.

“When I get upset about issues like the amorality of Ann Lander's column or politicians' flim-flam rhetoric, friends often chide me.  "Why bother?" they ask.  "That's just the way things are."

But I think of the old story about the man who tried to save Sodom from destruction.  The city's inhabitants ignored him, then asked mockingly, "Why bother everyone?  You can't change them."

"Maybe I can't change them," the man replied, "but if I still shout and scream it's to prevent them from changing me!"

  So I keep screaming.”
