A Point from pastor

This week is our fall Missions Conference.  Michael Cohen with Chosen People Ministries is speaking.  Mike is a missionary to the Jews in Los Angeles.  L.A. has the second largest concentration of Jews in the United States (700k).  We had no inclination when we originally decided to bring him in that there would be a war in Israel.   He'll  give us some unique perspectives and insights on this conflict through his background and connections.

Join us Saturday night at 7pm.  Mike will also be sharing during the Sunday school hour at 8:45 am; even if you do not normally come to SS, you will want to join us this week.   Finally, he will be sharing during our worship service Sunday morning.

Join us as we hear of this important ministry.

Thank you SSB.   None of us as pastors are huge fans of "Pastor Appreciation Month."   We are really just wanting to be diligent to the work God has called us.  Yet, you take the time and even give of your resources to bless us at this time.  Thank you for doing so Sunday morning.   I was greatly blessed and I thank you!  We are each appreciative in your greatly blessing us... in the many ways you do so.   Again, thanks.

- John 8:12

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

- Psalm 27:1

And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them.

- Isaiah 42:16

the Lord's day

Pastor Tim opened reading from Psalm 132 and considering the war in Israel and God's concern for them.   Kyle Lane gave an elder update including a gift and expression of appreciation to the elders (Thanks!).

The message gave us the third proof from 1 John 5 of being born again:  overcoming the world.  The world is full of corruption and death.  Our faith gives us victory.  We have victory over temptations & sin, victory over fear & hopelessness, victory over Satan, victory over judgment, and victory over death.   Our faith overcomes the world through:
- By receiving & believing what God says about the world.
- By obeying God
- By becoming more grounded in God's kingdom and our eternal satisfaction
- Through our intimacy with Christ.
God has not let us go... He gives us the victory.  It's already an accomplished fact.

Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?    - Romans 6:1-14

In Romans 6, Paul explains that, although sin was flourishing, grace had flourished even more.  He then asks, “Should we continue in sin that grace may abound?”   In other words we will get so much more grace because of so much more sin.  The answer to the question is “certainly not!”  Because of grace, sin should be dead.  Because of grace, we are a resurrected people.  Resurrection comes after death.  We must be crucified to be resurrected. Our old self is dead.  Or it should be.   We must willingly still die to self.   Thus Galatians 2:20 says “I am crucified with Christ…”  We don’t willingly want to die.  Thus, we must be crucified.  Our old self must be put to death and it must be done violently, with force.   Show no mercy to sin.   Let it die on the cross… and keep it on the cross.  God’s grace wins because Jesus won!

“The problem is not divorce... the problem is that people don't know how to be married.  They don't actually get married in many cases, though they go through a legal and possibly a religious ceremony. They are, sad to say, incapable of marriage - the kind of constant, mutual blessing that can make two people in conjugal relation literally one whole person (Eph. 5:22-23).  To be married is to give oneself to another person in the most intimate and inclusive of human relationships.”
