STANDING STONE BIBLE

WEEKLY

November 13, 2023

A Point from pastor

"It's good to be home."  You have felt that and even said that after an extended time away.  It speaks to a longing of every Christian's heart to be able to eventually, finally say those words as we step into the presence of our great and glorious God in the mansion that will be our new home.  It is good to be home.

Thank you, SSB Family, for allowing me time away - this last week with Whitney... pretty much soaking up REST.    Ask me sometime and I'll share a few takeaways (some of my Top Ten list) and thoughts on this trip.  It is good to be home.

Thank you to Ron Anderson, Steve Bothwell, Garrett Wirges, Ivan Zieg and Emily Zieg for their work and time on putting the narthex coffee station together.

This Friday is a popcorn event - we will watch a movie that has drama and intrigue... and is biographical.   You'll  be encouraged but also challenged to continue to stand strong for our country and, most importantly, for our Lord Jesus Christ!

We look forward this coming Sunday to our annual "nom com" meeting as SSB members need to select two that will serve on the nominating committee.   "The two elected members to the Nominating Committee shall be elected by ballot from at least four member nominees respectively."  The elders will choose another two.  This committee will then work to find willing and qualified nominees for the eldership.

Finally, next Wednesday evening is a Thanksgiving special at 7pm.  If you take the time to study "thanksgiving" in Scripture, you might notice that we probably all fall sadly short.   Let us recommit to "magnify Him with thanksgiving" (Ps. 69:30) - may this event help you to focus that way.

Here are the highlights of classes and events THIS week

Membership Meeting - Sunday evening, November 19, at 6pm is the annual "Nom Com" meeting.  We need to vote for two members on the 2024 Nominating Committee.  That group will assist in putting together a group of elder candidates to vote on in February.

upcoming events

Make note of the classes and events available in the near future

Thanksgiving Special - Wednesday, November 22nd is a special Thanksgiving service at 7pm in the sanctuary.

I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.

- Psalm 101:2-3

Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

- Titus 2:12

Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

- Luke 12:33-34

the Lord's day

We opened considering the veterans that have served us in the past.   We thank God for the freedom we have in the US of A but also recognize that it has been built and maintained by great sacrifice - thank you men and women!

We welcomed new members - Matt and Holly Sutton.  We encouraged them to serve and ask SSB to get to know them so as to serve them better.

Al Douglas brought the message sharing about valley days and  mountaintop days.   Then, the other 363 days.   In this world, we are pilgrims ... and nothing in it will satisfy us.   2 Pet. 1:3, "as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue..."  It is by God's divine power that we are saved, that we have strength to get through those valleys.   Live a life with God - in His kingdom - while you are here in this desert.  He'll be your sustenance and guide.

Be the Church

Busy, Busy Busy

Busyness can be seasonal.   “I’m busy” is a universal answer to many questions… how was your week?… can you talk now?…  you want to hang out this weekend?… could you help with this ministry?…  “I’m busy.”  Are we “worried and upset about many things” when “one thing is necessary” (Luke 10:38-42).  Are we busy like Martha when we should be sitting at the feet of Jesus like Mary?   Believers should be intentionally protecting and devoting time to be with Jesus.  May our balance of work, ministry, and time with Jesus be an example to others in the body of Christ.

“Here's a scary thought:  It's possible to admire humility while remaining proud ourselves...  For me, the most consistently helpful [thing to do] is this:  Reflect on the wonder of the cross of Christ...  To truly be serious and deliberate in mortifying pride and cultivating greatness, you must each day survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died.”
