STANDING STONE BIBLE

WEEKLY

November 18, 2024

A Point from pastor

Annually, Standing Stone Bible Church is required by Constitution to assemble a nominating committee to find willing and qualified nominees for the church offices.  Two of these are selected by ballot from the membership.  Last night, at a well-attended business meeting, Mike Houdek and Chris Sebranek were chosen.  They will join two other members (selected by the eldership) along with myself to begin the process of nominating elders.  This process begins officially in December.  If you are a member of SSB, please begin to consider nominating qualified men.  In the spirit of Acts 6:3, we choose from among us qualified men (consider Titus 1:6-9, 1 Timothy 3:1-3, and 1 Peter 5:1-3).  SSB members, be considering those among the flock that might be qualified.   In addition to elders, we need one to serve as a deacon operating in the role of Assistant Treasurer.

Among other items, we also shared more about the Ashland Bible Church project.  As you heard, it is going well.  Yet, changes are on the horizon.   Much of that will be unnoticed in the short-term but there are going to be longer-term changes.   We do not know all of the specifics at this time.  But, God knows - may we continue to seek Him in prayer asking for His wisdom and direction.  .  .   He has the ABC pastor ready to go...   Somewhere.   God knows!   He also knows all of the next steps for PK, myself, SSB, ABC, all of us.  Pastor Ken B shared of Paul's vision of a man in Macedonia saying "come help us" (Acts 16).  Perhaps PKB will have a late-night vision?  Most likely, it will come the typical way . . .   through seeking God's face and the plan then unfolding before us.   Some people, somewhere, are asking God for help.   May we respond when God says "go!"   God knows!!!

Thank you, SSB!   Last night was a wonderful meeting.  We so appreciate your attendance and concern for this church!

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.  Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”

- Isaiah 6:1-3

“Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.

- Jeremiah 23:23-24

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high

- Hebrews 1:3

the Lord's day

We heard an update from a few of our youth that went to the Reality Apologetics Conference in Minneapolis.  They spoke of the importance of God's Word, standing strong in your faith, and sharing Jesus with others.  Let us be in prayer for them in the coming days that these truths take root and bear fruit.  Thank you PT, Neil, and Sarah for journeying with them!

We also dedicated Jackson to the Lord!  He was an answer to prayer for Pastor Tim and Katie.  Our desire is that he early comes to know Jesus as Lord and that Tim and Katie teach and show Jesus daily.  As a church, may we also hold Jack, Mom, and Dad up in prayer and do our best to admonish them and speak the gospel to him often.

We shared in some great worship and praise to the one who is still rolling stones away!   There was joy in the house of the Lord!   The message continued this as we read from Matthew 19 and 20 a parable of a landowner hiring and paying workers.  Unfortunately, those hired first were disgruntled at the generosity of the landowner paying those working only and hour exactly what they were paid.

Three final challenges to us were given... that we realize God is not in debt to us.  All of the blessings we have are only by His grace.  Second, that we capture how much God deeply cares for other people.  They are His image bearers and everyone is due profound respect in our eyes.  Last, how generous God is!  Those working a full day accused the landowner (God) of being stingy.  They should have, instead, rejoiced at the good fortune of those who were last.    Let us rejoice in how generous God has been to us and rejoice in how generous He is to others, even those who we might think are not as deserving.  "But many who are first will be last, and the last first" (Matt. 19:30).

The Moral of the story

A farmer asked a local restaurant owner if he might be interested in serving frog’s legs.  The farmed explained that he could bring a million of them in.  This intrigued the restaurant owner so the farmer continued, “There is a pond near the house that is full of frogs – millions of them.  They croak all through the night and I’m going to get rid of them.  I will sell them to you cheap.”

The owner made a deal with the farmer to test out the menu asking for five hundred legs at a time for the next several weeks.  The first week, the farmer returned to the restaurant with two frogs.   And an explanation – “I was mistaken.  All I could find were these two frogs in the pond.  But they sure were making a lot of noise!”

Critical voices often seem extremely loud.   Those who say unkind things seem loud and it can feel like many are against you.  Often, though, it may just be a couple of noisy frogs.  We should listen for honest feedback as we may be receivers of Galatians 6:1 that says, “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.”  If we can be helped by the criticism, we should be thankful.  However, that same letter warns, “But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another” (Gal. 5:15).  We must be careful about biting criticism – it may sound loud but may just seem louder than it ought.

“Christianity is a statement which, if false, is of no importance, and, if true, of infinite importance.  The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.”
