An old hymn, "Now Thank We All Our God," was written by Martin Rinkart in the 1600's. As a pastor in Germany, many faced tremendous troubles during the Thirty Years' War; pastors were engulfed with preaching, taking care of the sick/dying people, and burying those who had died. The pastors themselves often took ill and died. Eventually, Martin Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in his town and, as the story goes, there was at least one day where he conducted fifty funerals.
What do you do in the midst of such tragedy? You turn to God in song thanking Him for His wonders, bounty, and countless gifts! Imagine that! Rinkart composed this hymn for those who had survived. Just as the trio sang to God last Sunday to keep us safe until the storm passes us by, we can also sing in thankfulness for His great blessings - in and after the storm.
A line from "Now Thank We All Our God" by Martin Rinkart:
O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all ills in this world and the next.
