A Point from pastor

An old hymn, "Now Thank We All Our God," was written by Martin Rinkart in the 1600's.  As a pastor in Germany, many faced tremendous troubles during the Thirty Years' War; pastors were engulfed with preaching, taking care of the sick/dying people, and burying those who had died.  The pastors themselves often took ill and died.  Eventually, Martin Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in his town and, as the story goes, there was at least one day where he conducted fifty funerals.

What do you do in the midst of such tragedy?  You turn to God in song thanking Him for His wonders, bounty, and countless gifts!   Imagine that!  Rinkart composed this hymn for those who had survived.   Just as the trio sang to God last Sunday to keep us safe until the storm passes us by, we can also sing in thankfulness for His great blessings - in and after the storm.

A line from "Now Thank We All Our God" by Martin Rinkart:
O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all ills in this world and the next.

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

- James 1:19-20

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

the Lord's day

We shared about the importance of being thankful to God.  We also expressed thanksgiving to Sue Post for her many years of serving us in cleaning ministry at the church.  We've been blessed by her faithful, loving touch in keeping the church bright and clean.

Ken Clipperton brought the message from 1 Corinthians 1: 26-31, predictably on a "But God" theme. This time, "But God Chose the Foolish." God’s way is not man’s way. God’s normal pattern is to choose, fill, and use people with whom the world is unimpressed. The foolish, the weak, the lowly, and the despised.

Remember, “God opposes the proud. But he gives grace to the humble.” You may feel unimportant and unimpressive. You are right where he can use you!

"Serving God with our little is the way to make it more; and we must never think that wasted with which God is honored or men blest."

So, what do you have in your hand?

BIG Words

Reprobation

See Ezek. 33:11; Rom. 9:17-22; 1 Peter 2:8; Jude 4.  “Reprobation” comes from the verb “reprove” as in admonishing.  It is the doctrine of God’s sovereign decision to pass over some persons, the nonelect, condemning them to eternal punishment for their sins.  Calvin proposed this doctrine and, although he acknowledged it from Scripture, he regarded it as a “dreadful doctrine.”  It is regarded as one of the most difficult of all teachings in Scripture to consider and accept.  Even so, we must be careful in our attitude and understanding of God toward passages that speak of it.  God’s wisdom is beyond ours and to acknowledge reprobation is to acknowledge how the eternal condemnation of some will show God’s justice and result in His glory.

“Man builds institutions.  God is growing a body, a fellowship.  The institutions divide and alienate.  The boyd unites...  The big question:  Where do I place priority?  On what man is doing or on what God is doing?”
