A Point from pastor

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

Those words spoken over eight score years ago were the opening words of Abraham Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address speech.  A score is twenty years.   As he spoke in 1860, he referred back to 1776.

What might we say 87 years from now?   At a horrific battle sight, Lincoln referred to an amazing event when the United States was being birthed.  Four score and seven years since was 1947 and another four score and seven years will be 2034.   Time marches on.  Will we be able to look back on the past with significance about the great things that happened?  The only way will be if we work towards those great things today.   Today is our future past.

Hebrews speaks of looking to the past.  Hebrews 10:32 says, "But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings..."   It continues on highlighting a not so good past.  But, it makes a point to note that, in the hard times of the past, the Hebrews had compassion, joyfully accepted the hard times, knowing they had a better future.   Looking to the past was meant to encourage them today:  Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.  For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised (Heb. 10:35-36).

It may not be you writing four score and seven years hence.  But those who know you now,  what will they write?   What might you write about today that is impactful to that generation?   No one in 1776 envisioned a Civil War 87 years later.  But their bringing forth that new nation was still impactful then... and it is yet today.  As C.S. Lewis wrote, "There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal."  Your life today can be tremendously impactful to many tomorrow.    Ending that thought of looking to the past, the Hebrews writer says, "But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls"  (v. 39).

There may be nothing better you can do today to impact your future and other people's future than to "not... shrink back," and to "have faith and preserve your soul."    Whatever challenge is in front of you, trust in the Lord that He has you.  Be confident in that.  Take this one day and walk in it.  Let God worry about the next.  Preserve your soul... do the things necessary to draw you to God (prayer, Bible, church).  And don't shrink back.  Keep walking.  Walk another seven years.  Then a score.   Two score.   Your life - your faith today - can have a positive impact four score and seven years from now.

He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,

- Ephesians 1:5

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

- Romans 8:29-30

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

- Jeremiah 1:5

the Lord's day

We worshipped God authentically - well, hopefully we all did.   As Jesus said, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”  May our Sunday morning worship services always be truly worshipful, in spirit and truth!

The message from 1 John 5 spoke of our being in the battle.   Do we know we are in a battle?  And, do we know that the victory is in Jesus?   We should look to God's grace, His love, and be in awe of Him.   Then, we serve, serve God/serve others from the place of grace, love and awe.   Finally, we considered, again, that the victory comes from Jesus and we should trust in the Spirit to give us that victory.  Be filled with the Spirit.

But, who do you say I am?      - Matthew 16:15

Jesus asked this of Simon Peter.  After hearing the disciples share what the general public was saying about Jesus, He wanted to know what the disciples thought.  Could it be Jesus is asking this question of you?  Who do you say He is?  How you answer this question, truly answer this question, is the determining factor of you being truly saved.
Some correct answers from Scripture:   Jesus is Savior.  Jesus is Lord.  Jesus is God.  Jesus is God’s only begotten son.   Jesus is Emmanuel.  Jesus is King.  Jesus is the Lamb of God.  Let’s, though, narrow it down to the answer Simon Peter gave.  He responded:

1) You are the Christ (or Messiah).  Are you saved?  How do you know?  Why do you think you are?   It isn’t your good works.  It’s not that you go to church.   Did you ever feel sinfully lost and knew you needed Jesus as your Savior?   Was there a point where you realized you are not good enough, that you have sinned, and nothing you could do could ever save you?

2) The son of the living God.  Jesus is God’s son, thus a prince or ruler.  Is Jesus also Lord of your life?  Does it show?  The easiest way to see what matters to you is to look at your calendar and look at your checkbook.    If you wrote down everything you did throughout the day and accounted for every bit of time, would you be told “Well done, good and faithful servant!” or would you be called a “Wicked and lazy servant” (see Matthew 25).

“Yes, leadership and authority are obviously God-like qualities, but submission is every bit as God-like.  To submit with joy to our husbands is to be like Christ, who submits joyfully to the Father.  Submission follows and reflects the very pattern of the Trinity!  That, ladies, is the biblical view of submission.”
