A Point from pastor

Thank you SSB for the great turn out last night at our Missions Mini.  The ministry teams that presented were very encouraged and quite excited by your presence.  We had a great turnout!

And, each speaker blessed us.   To hear the simplicity of the choice before each woman that comes into Assure Women's Center  (she chooses life or death).  To hear of the young boy's story at Campus Life (from a struggling home life to new life in Christ).  To hear of men and women in prison learning of the hope in Christ with several that have been saved.  To hear of Open Door Mission's unashamedly refusing to take down God's Word printed on their walls and insisting they continue being a "Gospel Rescue Mission."  To hear of Glad Tidings Bible Camp's joy in having kids open God's Word to read of the good news of Jesus.

To hear of all of that... was a blessing and encouragement to me and, as many of you shared,  you as well.  Remain in prayer for God's protection and provision on those ministries...  as well as boldness to proclaim Jesus.  We have some that serve at those ministries as well.  Pray for them.  And for the people these local ministries serve... they need healing, hope and new hearts!

-----
Frank and April Figueroa with Reasons for Hope* were great yesterday morning as well!  "God said it, I believe it, that settles it"? ? ?   No!!!   My belief doesn't matter.  "God said it, that settles it!"   Frank shared this during Sunday school as he spoke of the importance of living life based on the truth of God's Word.  We must take everything back through Scripture and not be duped by the illusions thrown at us by culture, "scientists," "professionals," and the media.   He also shared during the worship service (see "The Lord's Day" below).

THIS WEEK

Here are the highlights of classes and events THIS week

Pinewood Derby - The annual Pinewood Derby is Wednesday at 6:30pm.   Dinner will begin early at 5:45.  The children should be able to start checking cars in at 6pm.    The kids enjoy racing but we challenge everyone that comes that we are in a race!   As we cheer on the kids, our hope is that God will use the message of Christ that we present as an outreach to parents and others that attend who may not normally go to church.

OA:sis - Supner will begin at 5:45 Wednesday night to allow for an earlier derby start.

Info Class - The final information class is Sunday morning during the Sunday school hour.  This class is great for anyone new and is also a requirement for any considering membership.

- Psalm 27:10

He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will...

- Ephesians 1:5

To redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

- Galatians 4:5-7

the Lord's day

Sunday School was combined for middle school through adults as Frank Figueroa shared (see above notes).  We worshipped our great God, singing Hallelujah as we praised Him... all our inmost being praising His holy name.

Frank Figueroa with Reasons for Hope* shared from Luke 9:57-62 about the importance of Jesus' command to "follow me."  He did not say "follow me" as a short-term commitment but the wording is present tense as in we are to continue following Him.  We are to imitate Him and commit to Him as if laying down our life.  Not an event but a way of life.

In Luke 9, we see three men saying they want to follow Christ but they each fail... one for comfort, one for riches, and one for relationships.  Are we willing to give these up for the sake of following Jesus Christ?   We must be willing to do so!   Are we willing to... have nowhere to lay our head. (v. 58)?  Are we willing to "go and proclaim the kingdom of God" (v. 60)?  Are we willing to put our hand to the plow without looking back? (v. 62)?  This is the call to follow Jesus!

The Moral of the story

In 218 BC, Hannibal looked down from the Alps to the Roman Empire.  This was the kingdom the Carthaginian king had come to destroy.  Coming down the mountain, his army came across an enormous rock wedged into the valley floor.   Too large to pass with chariots, they had to move it out of the way to continue.

The attempts at breaking it apart were futile.  Finally, Hannibal cried out, “burn it!”  Many of the troops thought he was mad but they obediently cut down trees and laid wood around the rock starting a fire that became an inferno surrounding this rock.  As the fire blazed, the rock finally split in two, breaking apart.  Hannibal and the army were able to pass.

I hear much of mental health counseling today.  So many have emotional and mental problems that they are looking for help with.   Others believe that we can change bad people into good people with education, an improvement in their environment, or money assistance.  There may be some temporary help there but only God is able to change the human heart.  It is like a large rock that cannot be moved by any other means than God’s power.   Without addressing the heart needs with the Gospel, we are only tapping on the rock with hammers that do very little.  But, the Gospel, through the power of the Holy Spirit, like a fire, is the one helps us “to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph. 2:23-24).

“The best course to prevent falling into the pit, is to keep at the greatest distance; he that will be so bold as to attempt to dance upon the brink of the pit, may find by woeful experience that it is a righteous thing with God that he should fall into the pit...  Sin is a plague, yea, the greatest and most infectious plague in the world; and yet, ah! how few are there that tremble at it, that keep at a distance from it!”
