A Point from pastor

It is disheartening to hear of the death toll in Gaza surpassing 50k people.  Now, this is from the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry (so to clarify, how many are innocent is questionable).  Yet, women and children have died.  It is disappointing to hear that Israel  had to intercept rockets fired from Lebanon and then struck Hezbollah targets in response.  This being the worst cross-border violence since the November ceasefire.  Israel continues at war; how dreadful.

It is tragic that the world seems at war.  Even in our own country. Better use some dental-floss to remove the Tesla symbol if you drive one. . . . so your car is not vandalized.  The world is at war.

Chuck Colson's words that introduced an old Steven Curtis Chapman song have been ringing in my ears of late.  Heaven in the Real World begins with these words:  "Where is the hope? I meet millions of people who feel demoralized by the decay around us. The hope that each of us has is not in who governs us, or what laws we pass, or what great things we do as a nation. Our hope is in the power of God working through the hearts of people. And that's where our hope is in this country. And that's where our hope is in life."

Only God can truly transform a heart.  Anyone in Christ is a new creation.  In him is life, and that life is the light of men.  "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:4-5).   Some days it feels more and more like the darkness is winning.  But, it can never, never overpower the light of Christ - and that light is shining in mankind.  In you and in I.  Our hope is in the transformative power of the gospel of Jesus - It is in Jesus!   So, let your light shine!   "Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:16).   Even if the world continues to be at war, we know that Christ is coming... even soon perhaps.  So, we shine, stand strong, and wait for that fullness of light!   Don't lose hope.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

- Romans 8:28

The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.

- Proverbs 16:4

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

- Psalm 138:8

the Lord's day

We heard some updates about last Sunday's specials as well as the  youth trip to Kearney.  It was great to hear about their growing in apologetics.   We sang of abiding in Christ . . .  oh, may we be more and more in Christ!

The message from Matthew 13 warned us not to pull the weeds out!  There will be weeds.  Satan has planted his people amongst God's people but we should wait until the end days for God to handle these "weeds."  We must be wise.  When asked if the weeds should be gathered sooner, Jesus responded, "No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest..." (Matt. 13:29-30).  The wheat is too important.  As much as God is patient that unbelievers would reach repentance (2 Pet. 3:9), He is also patient with believers.  Those who are still growing in their faith might be disrupted or even destroyed by our weeding.  Let's focus on the wheat.  Make sure we know God's Word and are growing in sound doctrine.  Be about church discipline - don't neglect it.  Guard against harmful influences.  Call everyone to repentance and faith in Christ.  And, most importantly, trust God!

BIG Words

Immutability

See Numbers 23:19; Isaiah 40:28; Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8; James 1:17.  “Immutable” means “unchanging” or “unalterable.”  God is immutable.  Perhaps immutability is best expressed this way:  God is the same.   Charnock wrote “He could not be the same if he could be changed into any other thing than what he is.”  You are the same, and your years have no end (Psalm 102:27).  God’s immutability is an expression of His perfection.   Change implies something might become better or worse.  Although we might see in Scripture that God “changes his mind” (Gen. 6:6; Exo. 32:14; Jonah 3:4), these are examples of anthropomorphism (see “Big Words,” SSB Weekly, Jan 30, 2023).  These are human characteristics applied to God that we might better understand Him (e.g. when we read of God’s “hand”).  God adapts His treatment of us in response to our variation, our actions and character.  Thus, God was to destroy Nineveh in 40-days but they repented.  God’s character remained immutable throughout.  God is the same!

“Compare the attributes of God with what men usually trust. They trust in riches, strength, and princes. Riches are uncertain, unsatisfying, insufficient, limited, and deceitful. God is unchangeable, satisfying, all sufficient, and faithful. Strength is vain. God is omnipotent. Princes are trembling, broken reeds. God is the Rock of Ages. Will men trust in a spider's web, in a shadow, in a lie, and in nothing? Is it not reasonable to trust in the Lord? Use God's attributes to strengthen faith. I am sinful, but God is merciful. I am unworthy, but he is gracious. I abused patience, but he is love. I am unfaithful, but he is faithful. Fix on the attribute of God that most suits your condition. In him, there is more than we need, more than we desire, more than we can imagine, infinitely more!”

- David Clarkson
