A Point from pastor

Mother's Day became an official US Holiday over 100 years ago. We celebrate moms on that day in spite of the fact that some women are hurting.  It can be a painful day through loss of a child (or children), heartbreak due to wayward children, or from desiring to be a mother but unable.  

Another pain that some face on Mother's Day is grief from having lost a mother.   Mom is not around on Mother's Day.... there is no one to call, to thank, or to appreciate.  

I remember before my maternal grandmother passed away, we had a 90th birthday party for her.  I had just purchased a nice video camera (as we were expecting our first child) and filmed grandma at her party.  After she passed away early the next year, I made a video from that footage and gave it to my mom.  She cried as she shared these words:  "I didn't think I would ever hear mom's voice again."   How special is a mother's voice?   No words can truly express that.   A mom's voice, caress, hug, kiss, smile... those are missed.  Mom is missed.

For those of you that find Mother's Day especially hard, remember God's words to us.... “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).   I'm reminded of a mother's compassion in this verse - truly a God-given compassion.   That compassion is still available from God as His compassions never fail and are new every morning.   May you find a special compassion from God in that pain.

The CCS (Colossae Collaborative School) is a homeschool help offered by SSB.  Preparations for the 2024/2025 school year are taking place now.  If you have an interest for your children or want to learn more, send a note to the SSB Office.

Young Adults ages 18-26 -  Meet tonight!  7pm.

SSB Polling Site -  Tuesday is the primary election and SSB is a polling site from 8am to 8pm.  Please limit calls and visits to church.  

Men's Study - Saturday at 6:30 am is a men's life group study at SSB
Men's Breakfast - Saturday at 7:30 am is the monthly men's breakfast with encouragement and a speaker.
Men's Work-Time - Saturday at around 8:30 am is a brief work time to finish up some projects on the building (and outside).

Summer Kid Events - SSB will host a Good News Club (4-day club sponsored by CEF) on June 17-20th.   Then, in July, our Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be July 8-11 (mornings).    If you might be interested in walking the neighborhood to hand out postcards/flyers to invite kids, let PKW know.

Summer Bible Camps - Glad Tidings is a camp ministry we have sent several kids to.   They offer camps for pre-school age through High School (and a "wilderness" camp).  Visit their web-page HERE and consider signing up the kids.  Camps run end of May through July.  SSB will help with money if that is a concern.  

Creation Days Conference - August 10th will be this year's annual "Creation Days."  The format, this year, will be an all-day conference.   Matt Miles with the Creation Truth Foundation will be teaching at SSB (including breakout talks).  Food and childcare will be provided.

the Lord's day

We celebrated and thanked the moms.   Thank you gals for your amazing ability to nurture, admonish, love, and build our children up.   Every mom is uniquely special but also gifted by the Lord with an ability to care for children that is amazing.  Moms, we appreciate and thank you!  

We sang... we sang of having the strength to meet our trials, "day by day" given by the Father.   We pleaded in song for God to "bind us together," celebrating that there is only one God, one King, one body.  We then sang of the firm foundation we have in Christ.   Why would He fail now?  He won't!   He's faithful through generations!!!   We finished singing praise "for all You've done" - for all that Christ did to live, die, rise again, all to open the way for we to live again.  Hallelujah!!!

The message returned us to the idea of praying for marriage in God's will (1 John 5:14-15).  We asked "what is God's will in marriage" considering Genesis 2:24.  God's will is that we leave parents, that we join with one another (cleave) and that we become one flesh.  God's will in leaving is the couple still honors their parents but they be more concerned with each other.   God's will in cleaving means "til death do us part."  Divorce is not God's will.   God's will in "one flesh" is certainly about the sexual union but ultimately about more and more living as one (not two)... sharing bodies, possessions, ideas, problems, success, and suffering.   Husbands, lead... and love your wife.  Wives, submit... and respect your husband. 

Be the Church

Community

God knows best that we should be a part of community.  One way we do this at SSB is through Life Groups.  In Genesis 2:18, God said that “it is not good for the man to be alone.”  Even before the fall, God saw that isolation is not a great spot for us to be in.  We need community.  Those that are saved are both placed into Christ and into the church.  We are to be in relationship with God and with other believers.   Life groups help us experience this community and being connected.  Commenting on the fellowship that can occur in this, Chuck Swindoll wrote that “fences come down.  Masks come off.  Welcome signs are hung outside the door.  Keys to the doors of our lives are duplicated and distributed.  Joys and sorrows are shared.”   If you are not in a life group, “it is not good…”   I know I’m taking a bit of leeway with that verse, BUT, if you are not in a life group, why not??   Get into one or start one in your home today.   Be the church!
