A Point from pastor

Hopefully you made something special of Memorial Day.   It is and should be, in many ways, a solemn event.  But, yet, do not feel guilty about enjoying frivolous aspects (such as special food or enjoyment).  After all, what would those who we are memorializing want us to do?   I am quite certain that enjoying the freedom that they paid the price to protect for us would be high on their list.   Perhaps that is why Carl Fisher, an Indianapolis business man, instituted the Indianapolis 500 on the May 30th, 1911 (the last Tuesday in May) and it is most often now held near Memorial Day.  Freedom to drive fast, really fast?

Yet, it was eleven years later, May 30, 1922, that the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated.   William Howard Taft (former president and, then, the Supreme Court chief justice) dedicated it before 50,000 people.  Robert Todd Lincoln also attended.  Seriousness still is important for the day.

The death of every image bearer is significant and Memorial Day is a worthy time to be reminded of our veterans who have departed (as well as other ones).  May we also be reminded of He who is the Resurrection and Life - our Jesus - trusting that death is swallowed up in the victory that He has won.

Church Notes...

A special concert featuring Daryl Mosley is planned at SSB on Sunday, June 16th at 6pm.   He is a singer/songwriter who weaves his faith into each of his songs.   This is for anyone to attend and you may direct people to our website for information/promotion of the event:  https://standingstonebible.church/concert

You may also learn more about Daryl here:   Daryl Mosley website

THIS WEEK

Here are the highlights of classes and events THIS week

Communion / Pot Trust - This Sunday is our monthly time of Communion.  Prepare yourself this week.  Also, after service, we will have a pot "trust" meal - bring a dish to share and join us.

Special Sunday School Class -  Sunday morning, in room 100, we will offer a time with Jaime Farias.  This will be a chance for Jaime to share his background and heart with you.  You will also be able to ask him question.  We will have a membership meeting on Sunday, June 9 to discuss bringing Jaime on as a local evangelist, supported by SSB.

Sunday School Promotion - Sunday is "promotion" Sunday - the kids at SSB will move up a grade.  This is primarily a big change for 3 year olds (moving to the elementary grade classes), those entering 6th grade (moving to the middle school class), and those entering 9th grade (moving to the high school class).  Graduating seniors can remain with the high school class or join an adult class for the summer (hint-hint:  young adult class).

upcoming events

Make note of the classes and events available in the near future

Baptism Class?  - Be on the lookout as we will have a baptism class. Helpful to learn of this important step in following Jesus.  If you are saved but have not been baptized, consider joining this class.

Business Meeting - Sunday evening, June 9 at 6pm is a SSB meeting where members will be asked to vote on taking on evangelist, Jaime Farias, offering him funding and support.

Daryl Mosley Concert - Sunday evening, June 16th at 6pm is a concert by Daryl Mosley at SSB.

Summer Kid Events - SSB will host a Good News Club (4-day club sponsored by CEF) on June 17-20th.    Our Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be July 8-11 (mornings).    If you might be interested in walking the neighborhood to hand out postcards/flyers to invite kids, let PKW know.

Ladies' Progressive Supper - The ladies of SSB will have a progressive supper on Friday, June 21st, beginning at 5:30pm.  You may sign up HERE.

Summer Bible Camps - Glad Tidings is a camp ministry we have sent several kids to.   They offer camps for pre-school age through High School (and a "wilderness" camp).  Visit their web-page HERE and consider signing up the kids.  Camps run end of May through July.  SSB will help with money if that is a concern.

Creation Days Conference - August 10th will be this year's annual "Creation Days."  The format, this year, will be an all-day conference.   Matt Miles with the Creation Truth Foundation will be teaching at SSB (including breakout talks).  Food and childcare will be provided.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

- Romans 8:18

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.  Therefore encourage one another with these words.

- 1 Thess. 4:17-18

And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

- Mark 7:37

the Lord's day

This Sunday before Memorial Day, we honored our veterans, especially those who have given their lives.  We honored the families of those who have lost them.  We watched a video featuring Mel & Monica Alexander sharing of their son, Matthew.   Thank you to those who have paid for our country's freedom!

The message considered 1st John 5:14-15 and how we should rightly pray for marriage.  We might pray for UNITY:  Unity, Nearness, Immunity, Trust, and Yawdaw (thanksgiving & praise).    Praying rightly according to God's will in our marriage opens the door for God to hear and impact our marriage.

Be the Church

Together

Ever wonder why geese fly in a V formation? Scientists have studied this using computer software, aerodynamic laws, and flight simulators. The reason why is that it is the easiest way for the group to fly. In a “V,” the formation becomes like a single aerodynamic wing. The wind drag is distributed across all birds which reduces the drag on each individual bird. The results? Twenty-five geese flying in a V can travel 70% farther than a single goose flying alone. Even the lead goose gets drag relief from those ahead of it. The air flow pattern goes both ways.

Although the world might tell us that we are to be self-realized and we each make our own reality and can do “anything” on our own, we were created by God to work together. Thus, in leaving us, Christ did not leave us alone. He left the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us and He commanded us to remain a part of the church. Believers, like the geese, were created to work together, serve together, and encourage and support one another. As the church works together, we not only accomplish more, we go further and with less stress and difficulty.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

- Francis Scott Key, "Star-Spangled Banner"
