STANDING STONE BIBLE

WEEKLY

June 16, 2025

A Point from pastor

The "Monument Challenge" continues - you see this stone out front every Sunday...  but do you see it?  Do you know it?   Just as we can read the Word of God and not know the Word of God.

I shared yesterday of a gal who, in her forties, went through vision therapy to restore binocular vision.  Thus, to restore the ability to take each eye's image and combine it into a 3-D image.  It took some time but then, one day, her steering wheel "popped out" of the dashboard!  She could see in an extraordinary way.  God's Word does this for us if we allow it to.

Friday (yes, THIS Friday) is the summer solstice.  Thus, after Friday, the days are going to get shorter and shorter.  The sunlight is going to start fading.   Do not let this summer go by without going deeper with God.  Go deeper in God's Word.  Go deeper in your relationships.  Go deeper in what you know about neighbors (learn something new this week... you want to be able to share the Gospel with them!).  Go deeper in what you know about God.   Go deeper!   Make hay while the sun shines.

upcoming events

Make note of the classes and events available in the near future

NEXT WEEK:  Good News Club -  CEF Summer Good News Club is next week, June 23-26.  This will run 90-minutes each afternoon for kids ages 4-12 at church.  Each day the kids hear a Bible story, they play games and they get a clear gospel presentation.   No advance registration needed.

Safety Training - Annually, anyone at SSB who works with children and teens must attend a safety training session.  There are two sessions scheduled:  Saturday, June 28th at 10am and Monday, June 30 at 7pm.    This is also a necessity for ushers, security team, those who might help with VBS and is just generally good for all.

VBS - Vacation Bible School will run from July 7-10 in the mornings.  You may learn more and find the registration form HERE.   Plan now for  your kiddo to attend.   We will also need a good-sized crew of middle to high school students to help - or even a few of you "older than high-school" folks (hint-hint).  Talk to PKW for more info about helping.

Bible Memory - A Knowing the Word class will be held during Sunday school in July - talk to Ken Begg for more information.

An Information Class - Those interested in learning more about SSB, her history and future, as well as learning more of membership may join a 3-session information class beginning July 13 during the SS hour.

July Business Meeting - July 27... more details to come.

A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

- Isaiah 40:3

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

- Galatians 4:4-5

For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

- 2 Corinthians 6:2

the Lord's day

We dedicated one of our little ones - as we celebrated alongside Marco and Molly; their family is growing. May the Lord bless them as they continue to raise their kids to love Jesus.  We also, fittingly, honored fathers.  It is a big task to be a "dad" - may the men of SSB do well in exhorting their kids to love and follow Jesus.  Some have fathers who are gone or were troublesome men in their lives.  "Father's Day" can be a difficult day for many.  May God, the Father, be the great Fatherly presence in each of our lives.

We worked in Luke 15, speaking of another Father.  His younger son shamed his father and took his share of the inheritance and squandered it.   The Pharisees and scribes had a very narrow view of their heavenly Father, seeing Him as a strict master and as a father that should exclude unworthy children.  Yet Jesus was showing them a fuller picture of a God who seeks, mercifully restores and rejoices.   God's heart has always been one full of hesed,  love with mercy and compassion... ever-faithful lovingkindess!

• Do you not care that we are perishing?  Mark 4:35-41

Does God care that we are perishing?  First of all, He is in the boat with us!!!  Think about that.  The disciples cried out to Jesus that they were perishing, implying that He didn’t care.  Yet, if they perished, He would too!  For fear of the storm, they woke Jesus up.  Obviously, we don’t have to wake Jesus up but think how privileged we are to have no fear to approach him with our fears.  This is a God who is not afraid of the things we are afraid of.  The disciples woke Him up.  Jesus then first rebuked the storm, and second, rebuked the disciples.   God will address the things we are fearful of.  He will calm our storms and restore the peace in our lives.

Why were the disciples rebuked as having no faith?  Didn’t it show faith that by waking Jesus He would take care of the storm?  They didn’t fully know or trust that He could take care of the storm.  This is obvious by their great fear after He calmed the storm.  They were afraid of this power He displayed.   MacArthur wrote, “The only thing more terrifying than having a storm outside the boat was having God in the boat!”  The disciples perhaps had enough trust in Jesus that they did wake Him.

Jesus is the one who not only cares when we feel like we are perishing, He is in the boat with us.  We must trust in the One who not only delivers us from storms but delivers us through them.

“It is interesting that Jesus urges His followers to live fruitful lives in order that they may have this kind of prevailing prayer (see John 15:16).  We generally think of the importance of praying in order that we may live fruitfully.  This way of putting it makes it clear that prayer is very important in itself.”
