STANDING STONE BIBLE

WEEKLY

June 3, 2024

A Point from pastor

June has arrived.  Busy summer months are set out before most of us.   With kids out of school and the outside being very available compared to harsh Nebraska winters, many of us try to fit in many activities over the summer months.  From vacations to barbecues.... swimming to golfing.... camping to concerts....  WHEW!   Busy, busy, busy.

Don't neglect the important things in the midst of the fun things.  Enjoy the grilled meats and the cold treats but take time this summer to learn and grow and feed your soul.   Some ideas:

Make sure your kids (grandkids?) take in camps, clubs, and VBS.   Some or all.  Glad Tidings is a camp we support that is offering an upper elementary and a middle school camp later this month.  High school camp is next month.  VISIT THEIR WEBSITE for more information.   SSB can help with money if that is a concern.

Summer Good News Clubs happen in many neighborhoods.  These are put on by CEF and each day includes a gospel presentation.  SSB is hosting one June 17-20 (9-11am) at the church... All SSB kiddos are welcome... and this is a great opportunity to invite other kids.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is an annual event at SSB for grade schoolers. Many of our middle and high school youth help to lead this.  The kids will learn about Jesus during this event - VBS runs July 8-11 in the mornings.

A Special Music Concert - We have a special music treat on the evening of June 16th (6pm).  Daryl Mosley (3-time songwriter of the year) will be sharing the gospel message as he delights us with his music.  Visit SSB's website for info HERE.   You can also visit his website to listen in to a few of his songs for a sneak preview HERE.

Safety Training - This annual event at SSB is a time to learn more "behind the scenes" information of our safety requirements in ministry.  This is also a requirement for any who work with children or teens (including youth that help at VBS, children's church, or in the nursery).   We also ask our ushers, security folks, etc to join in a session.  There will be a few sessions scheduled soon.  Plan on attending one.

Men & Women - A car show is forthcoming, hosted by the men's ministry.  A time to show off that muscle car... or that not so muscly car.  The men also have a breakfast every month on the third Saturday.   The ladies have a progressive dinner on Friday night (June 21st).  Gals, you can RSVP HERE.

Creation Days - This annual event is a one-day conference this year.  Mark your calendar now to attend this on Saturday August 10th.  We will hear from Matt Miles (of Creation Truth Foundation) as well as a few break-out sessions on various topics to help you "sharpen the saw" and be more knowledgeable in sharing your faith.

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

- Proverbs 15:1

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

- Galatians 6:1

And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

- 2 Timothy 2:24-26

the Lord's day

We sang to this great Lord that we serve - offering praises to the indescribable, uncontainable God that we serve.  We then shared in His personal, intimate presence as we took part in Communion.  For this, we considered the question, "Why the bread?"

The message returned us to the topic of prayer over marriage as we finish up this important topic.  1st John 5:14 tells us to confidently pray to God, according to His will, knowing that He will hear us.   May we be thankful for marriage - for the blessings of marriage (some cannot be thankful for their own ...  but yet, God is worthy of thanksgiving - THINK of something to be thankful for).   Know that God is good and He is up to something good.

Did You Know?

SSB offers occasional information and membership classes - these are requirements for membership at SSB.  And, good information to know us better.

SSB also offers occasional baptism classes (one beginning on June 16).  This class offers helpful information on what the Bible teaches about baptism but also is a requirement for those who wish to be baptized at SSB.

This Month in Christian History

Ji Wang was part of an isolated Sediq tribal village in Taiwan.   At the age of 18, she was purchased for marriage by a Taiwanese merchant but her new husband was murdered within a few months.   She married another trader who left her in 1895 after she had a daughter.

Through those marriages, Ji Wang had become quite well known for her trade experience and the Japanese asked her to attempt peace-making efforts with Taiwan.  She helped bring a period of peace between the two cultures.  In 1906, she married another man (she discovered 17-years later that he had another wife and children).  He abandoned her in 1925 with a great amount of debt, leaving her destitute.  During these years, several tribes had been subjected by the Japanese to a reservation for “protection” from outsiders; they kept much of their culture but were forced to abandon head-hunting.

Ji wang was a central figure in helping this tribe to reconcile with God.  She became a Christian through the preaching of a Taiwanese Presbyterian pastor named Li Shiu-che.   After attending his church for a year, she was baptized on June 1, 1924.   Although she kept this secret from her own people for five years, she was encouraged in 1929 to receive training at a Presbyterian School so she might help to reach the tribal people.   From there, she was able to teach small groups of Sediq who came to her home under the cover of darkness.   As their numbers grew, they met secretly in caves or the mountains for worship.   After the Japanese left, many of the believers could be baptized (500 the first year alone) and form churches.   By 1949, over 5,000 Sediq had been baptized – much of that due to her ministry – she died in 1946 at the age of 74.
