A Point from pastor

Coincidentally (?)...  our younger girls asked to watch an episode of Gilligan's Island the other day.  I asked them, "Do you know when that TV show began?"  I knew it had been before I was their age but still had to confirm.   I say, "coincidentally," because the first episode aired September 26, 1964. . .  exactly 60 years prior to Hurricane Helene striking the Florida coast.   The Minnow's "three-hour tour" was one where they encountered a storm that stranded them on an "uncharted desert isle."  Note: 5 years ago on 9/26 was Susan Nylin's passing.  A stormy day indeed!

Now, as far north as western North Carolina, some folks are trapped on their own islands of sorts as Helene has isolated many in areas that did not expect much of a repercussion.  The rains have wiped out roads, etc.   Our own Jimmy and Alice Barnes have been separated, Alice in a location without necessary meds.  She's thankfully got medicine now but they are still apart from one another.  Jimmy assured me this morning that he is shopping Amazon for a helicopter - be in prayer for them!  Others are still lost in those areas.  Over 100 have died, many in locations that were not expecting anything more than a little rain.

We also note that this Sunday, October 7, will mark one year since Israel was attacked.  Over the weekend, Israel bombed and killed the leader of Hezbollah.  While this does not end the conflict, it is a win for Israel (and, frankly, the world in her struggle against terrorism).

May we be reminded in the natural disasters and evil regimes that "the whole world lies in the power of the evil one" (1 John 5:19).   As much as we are less impacted by nature today (than say a hundred years ago) and as much as we occasionally strike back in victory against an evil military group, we will not win the world!  This doesn't mean we give up but may we remember what we are fighting for.   "We know that we are from God"!    The world is destined to burn.   We need to be about living an obedient, godly life and helping to snatch others from the fire, teaching them to know God (1 John 5:20; Jude 1:23).  Time is short.   Jesus already won our victory!

- Revelation 4:11

Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself

- Isaiah 44:24

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

- Psalm 33:6

the Lord's day

Sunday was a youth-led service.  Typically the fifth Sundays of the month, we ask Pastor Tim to set the order of service and involve the youth in all aspects of running the morning service.  Thus, you were greeted by youth, saw them on stage, and they were behind the scenes helping (e.g. soundbooth).  We were served by our middle and high-schoolers... THANK YOU!

Pastor Tim opened the service to consider a good God even though bad things happen.  We then were led in worship by several of our high schoolers.    Pastor Tim then shared from Joshua 7:  Church, Deal with Your Sin!    He shared of the pattern of Achan  who saw, coveted, took, and then lied.  No different from Eve.  No different from his own lunch box troubles.   In Achan's sin, he eventually confessed but did not repent.  The sin cost he and his family their life.  Sin has consequences.  You have the opportunity to make right and own up to your brokenness.  SO, deal with your sin.  Deal with it, 1. Quickly, 2. Decisively, and 3. Get help.

Did You Know?

SSB annually has a fall missions conference where we highlight a missionary that we support.   Why is this important?   This allows you to hear of other cultures, learn of God's mighty movement around the world, and better pray/support missions.  As Christians we should be mindful and supportive of those who are witnesses "in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8).   Join us at this year's conference Wedn, October 16 through the 18th!

BIG Words

Hypostatic

See John 1:14; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3.  This word is used most often in the phrase “hypostatic union.”  The Greek hypostasis means “substance” or “essence” and refers to a real person.  Thus, the hypostatic “union” refers to the union of the two natures of Christ.   How can deity and humanity be united in one hypostasis (or person) of Christ?  At the incarnation, a human nature was united forever with the divine nature of God.   Yet the two natures “undergo no confusion, no change, no division, no separation…. He is not parted or divided into two persons, but is one and the same only-begotten Son, God, Word, Lord Jesus Christ.”1  The hypostatic union explains that this has happened although it does leave many metaphysical questions unanswered.  We need not understand the how but should hold to, as has been said, that “Jesus Christ is truly, perfectly, and wholly God, and he is truly, perfectly, and wholly man.”

1. From the Definition of Chalcedon.

“Jesus was not, in our contemporary sense, an idealist, and gives no intimation of believing that the world could be made better on its own terms, any more than that individual human beings could make themselves better on their own terms.  Just as they needed to be reborn, so the world would be reborn with the coming of God's Kingdom.”

- Malcolm Muggeridge
