A Point from pastor

Labor Day today - the SSB office is closed.

This week marks some launches:   SSB's school programs begin on Wednesday morning followed by OA:sis Wednesday night.  If you want to know more about the homeschool offerings at SSB, ask us questions.

OA:sis is the Wednesday night offering beginning with a meal at 6pm.  If you've missed this for a few years, come back!   OA:sis is a nice "break" in the week allowing you to relax without the stress of preparing a meal.   Plus, you get to enjoy some good company at the table.    After the meal, there are activities for all ages.  Adults, you can join in on either a Bible study (life group "e") or Prayer Force.  Kids grade 5th and younger join in on Clubz while the youth (6th - 12th) participate in LIGHThouse.

Saturday morning the WCC begins again.  This class is a study of doctrine using the Westminster Confessional as a guide and the Bible as our final authority.  Perhaps you feel the need for some serious study as we step into the fall months.  This might be a good starting point.  Join in Saturday at 8am.  The class is 90-minutes long at we meet the second Saturday of each month.

The fall months tend to be times of reflection and often powerful change.   We often equate "resolutions" with the beginning of the calendar year but, as summer winds down, vacations get finished, kids go back to school, the crops come in, and people start contemplating the winter months, many consider their walk with Christ and decide to make some changes.  If you are feeling restless in your walk, needing something more, do not discount that but make a few changes.  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Heb. 13:8).   We, though, are not the same and often need to make changes.  So..... Start studying a new book of the Bible, or join a Life Group, or plug in on a Wednesday night, or re-double your effort to pray for your SSB family, or remember the Sabbath to keep it holy, or join a Sunday school class, or make an effort to meditate on & memorize Scripture.  Make some changes!     The old definition of insanity is doing the same thing but expecting different results.   Where might God be leading you to do something different?

- 2 Timothy 1:7

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

- Ephesians 6:10

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

- 2 Corinthians 12:9

the Lord's day

During Communion, we spoke of coming to Christ for rest.  During the message, we were exhorted to get back to work.  God  so often weaves the service together in special ways..

We shared in communion considering the importance of time with God and resting from the busyness of life.    What a great pause and time of reflection given by our Lord.

Pastor Ken shared about the importance of labor, of work.  Work was given to Adam before the fall.  Thus, we labor and will labor even into eternity.  Jesus finished His work.  Our "good" works are odious to the Lord but, in His work, He took the cup of wrath, drank it, and offered us the cup of redemption.  We, in humble submission, must take of that cup.  Pastor shared of Joseph's time in prison.  We were in a prison house, under the curse.  Joseph's interactions with the baker and butler mirror the two types of people.  As each stood before Pharaoh three days after Joseph's prophecy, each of us must stand before God and give an account.  One was sent to death. The other was "resurrected."  We must examine ourself so that we can stand before the King - may we give a testimony of our sin, the Lord's work, His death and resurrection, and His redemption given to us.

This Month in Christian History

It began in May of 1957:  Billy Graham’s New York City Crusades at Madison Square Garden.

The crusades were scheduled to last for six weeks but continued for a total of sixteen weeks, the longest crusade in the history of Graham’s preaching.  Over 2.3 million people attended the event.  A man named George Elliott got saved after attending and then insisted that his wife make the trip to NYC from their New Jersey home – he watched the kids that night to allow her that luxury.

Emily knew something happened to her husband at the event but she contended that she would not be affected.  During her time there, George was at home on his knees crying and praying for his wife.   Emily did not realize the Spirit would also move her to repent and believe in Jesus.    Afterwards, that young family began reading the Bible and, later, George ended up in seminary to become a pastor.  George and Emily traveled the country planting churches and sharing the gospel.  All three of their children became Christ followers.   You might say that both George and Emily are “one in a million.”

The 1957 NYC Crusade ended on September 1st… sixty-six years ago.

“A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading.  There are traps everywhere - "Bibles laid open, millions of surprises," as Herbert says, "fine nets and stratagems."  God is, if I may say it, very unscrupulous.”

- C.S. Lewis
