A Point from pastor

If you watched the memorial for Charlie Kirk yesterday, you sat for awhile.  Note:  Please let my wife know for future reference that I really do like hearing Amazing Grace on bagpipes (hint-hint).

Since the event lasted over five  hours, there was too much said to summarize here.  There were certainly a fair share of political statements made .  There were some speakers that shared some skewed theological statements.  There were several things I wished were a little different.  However, there was also much that was good.  So many great worship songs.  And some many good stand-alone statements and memories of Charlie Kirk.

Erika Kirk (amazing that she was able to share) said that Charlie often quoted Isaiah 6:8, "Here I am, Lord.  Send me" and remarked that "eleven days ago, God accepted that total surrender from my husband, and then called him to His side."  She said, "Never before have I found as much comfort as I now do today in the words of our Lord’s Prayer: ‘Thy will be done.’"   She spoke of revival as many in this country have prayed, opened a Bible (for the first time) and went to a church service.   She also spoke of forgiving that young man.  I hope that was truly heartfelt.

Pastor Rob McCoy, the Kirk family pastor, gave the gospel presentation.  He spoke of Charlie's turning to Christ at a young age and shared clearly of Jesus coming to earth, being tempted yet without sin, and being crucified on the cross - that His blood was shed for the remission of sins.   He spoke of the cross being sufficient for all sins but effective only for those who receive Christ as Savior as Charlie did (so many need to hear that... as they believe in universalism).   Pastor McCoy said Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost.... He explained to all that Jesus wants to save them personally.   He said this of Charlie: "He knew that if he could get all of you rowing in the streams of liberty, you'd come to its source and that's the Lord."  He then offered an opportunity for men and women to stand for Christ to acceptJesus as their Savior, "putting action to your faith."  Many stood.   Obviously, in a mass crowd like that (over 90k in attendance and millions online) many do respond but not always are those true transformations.  May the Lord have brought MANY to true faith in Christ!!!

One of my favorite quotes was somewhat of a passing remark by our Vice President.  VP Vance was sharing how he did not speak openly about his faith in Christ a lot but that, "I have talked more about Jesus Christ in the past two weeks than I have in my entire time in public life.”   May this be a "turning point" for those in politics that do profess Christ as Savior.  May this be a "turning point" for our nation in response to their sinful ways and lack of repentance.  May this be a "turning point" for those who have demonstrated a lukewarm faith to be more bold.

Matt Sutton shared with me about a tract that is being developed ...  about a "turning point."  Wouldn't that be interesting?  Isn't that the gospel.   We are all in life heading in the wrong direction and, for some, the gospel of Jesus Christ is presented and their entire life encounters a "turning point" - they repent (turn away) of their sin and turn to Christ as their Savior.  May millions be encountering their turning point.  How beautiful it would  be.... how beautiful your feet would be if you go to people now and preach the good news!  (Rom. 10:14-15).   Preach of the possibility of a turning point today.

the Lord's day

Rod invited us to the fall feast table as he shared about Yom Teruah ("day of blowing") - most often called "Rosh Hashanah" on the calendars.   The challah bread - you heard - was made wrong.... supposed to be braided.  Three braids (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).  And round to represent the king's crown.   I was told afterwards (thanks Ken Begg) that he thought this was a setup for Jude... as the bread represented "false believers."  So, I totally missed it!   Whew!!!   Note also, there is significance in blowing the shofar (ram's horn) . This feast is an alert.  The sound of the Shofar is a wake-up call!  Christ is returning... wake up!    Go back and listen to Rod's presentation to learn more about the significance of these fall feasts to us.

We shared in music - lifting praises to God.... and we then had two sermons.  Well, sort of.   First was a challenge to younger believers, in light of the assassination of Charlie Kirk to act boldly on their faith, even when it costs them.   We considered 2nd Timothy - Paul's words reminding Timothy to not be fearful, be instead faithful, embracing courage, and finishing strong.  The challenge was to take one concrete step this week.

The message then continued exploring Jude 5–8, emphasizing the ongoing presence of false believers within the church and God’s sure judgment against sin and rebellion. We compared the historical examples given with how defiance and immorality lead to destruction, both physically and spiritually. Verse 8 connects these warnings to false believers in the church today, highlighting three key sins: defiling the flesh, rejecting authority, and blaspheming the glorious ones. We stressed the importance of submission to God’s Word and godly leadership, pursuit of holiness, and reliance on God’s grace rather than one’s own strength, reminding us that true faith is evidenced by purity, obedience, and humility.

BIG Words

Fundamentalism

See Psalm 119:160; Romans 16:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Titus 1:9; Jude 3.  Fundamentalism is a movement within Christianity that arose in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a reaction against modernist theology and secular influences, particularly higher biblical criticism and Darwinian evolution. It emphasizes a strict adherence to what are considered the “fundamentals” of the faith—such as the inerrancy of Scripture, the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, substitutionary atonement, bodily resurrection, and the literal return of Jesus Christ. Rooted in a desire to defend orthodox beliefs, the movement gained traction through publications like The Fundamentals (1910–1915), a series of essays affirming traditional doctrines. Over time, fundamentalism became associated not only with theological conservatism but also with a separatist stance toward mainstream culture and liberal Christianity.   The term today carries more baggage as it is more frequently connected to extremism and has lost much of its original description.

“During Rosh Hashanah, several blessings are pronounced, two of which are related to the blowing of the shofar.  The first... "Blessed are You, Adonai, King of the Universe, Who gives us commandments and calls us to hear the voice of the shofar.  The second... Blessed are You, Adonai, King of the Universe, Who has kept us alive and helped us to reach this moment.”
