- Communion will be shared this coming Sunday (May 3rd). Prepare your heart this week so that you are ready to join in this time. After, join with the SSB family for our pot-"trust" meal; bring a dish to share.
- Teen Life Truths (TLT) - CORRECTION: TLT is beginning on May 20th for 6th graders and older (not the 13th). This is a 10-week study of basic life principles that is a set-up for these students to live their middle-school and high school years with no regrets. We encourage all to join. Talk to Pastor Tim for more information.
- OA:sis is winding down - The final Wednesday evening meal for this season will be a week from this Wednesday (May 6th). The meal, as well as adult Bible Study and kidz clubs, will pause for the summer. Prayer Force and the youth LIGHThouse (6-12th grade) will continue to meet during the summer months (at 7pm).
- Sunday's message in Haggai saw where the Israelites had laid the temple foundation but abandoned the work due to opposition, choosing instead to focus on their own lives. God called them to deeply examine their ways, revealing that their misplaced priorities led to frustration, emptiness, and lack of blessing. Not unlike these people, believers today often delay obedience—not rejecting God outright, but saying “not now,” which is still disobedience. When the people respond rightly—with a genuine fear of the Lord that includes both reverence and seriousness—they obey, and before any visible progress is made, God assures them of His presence: “I am with you.” Obedience positions us to experience God’s presence, not earn it. Revival begins not with scheduling but with responding to God’s Word. As believers, we are called to stop delaying, address areas of disobedience, and trust that God will fill, stir, and empower those who return to Him.
- National Day of Prayer. I've always been puzzled by the "National Day of Prayer." Mostly because it seems to be a confusing message. My confusion:
- By calling for a national day of prayer, are non-believers led to believe that those who trust in God are not daily praying to God already. Are we not, as believers, to make every day, across this nation, a day of prayer?
- Perhaps the message is that this day is a more focused day of prayer... All of us spending even more time in prayer. Perhaps. Yet, to me this is still a confusing message. Are we not to be praying without ceasing. If I am already praying without ceasing, when do I have time for more prayer?
- Perhaps, by calling for a national day of prayer, we are inviting all Americans to pray alongside of us; grab hands and everyone sing "Kumbaya my Lord." Certainly, if a sinful man is coming to God with a broken, contrite heart, sincerely seeking Him, calling on Him to save and forgive (Note: Jeremiah 29:13), God will listen! But God hides His face from sin and does not hear the prayers of the unrighteous (yes, I'm saying... "God does not always answer prayer" - the Bible says that). Asking all people to join in prayer can, again, be a confusing message.
- If I am joining others in prayer, especially in a context where I am with others that are outside of the boundaries of Christianity (e.g. certain "churches" that are operating unbiblicaly), that is a confusing message as well. Although not technically wrong to pray, am I sending a message that by "joining hands" in prayer, I am in agreement -hands joined- on other matters as well?
- Finally, I wonder what the thought process is of believers that make a great effort to join in a "national" day of prayer but cannot be bothered to come to a church's weekly prayer gathering?
- Now that my thought confusion is expressed, I assume I have stepped on everyone's toes sufficiently. I must say that it is certainly good when God's people gather together to pray. National prayer days have been a part of the fabric of our country - Thanksgiving, for example, has been considered, from the beginning, a national day of prayer (as well as praise and celebration). It might just be a great thing for you to join in a prayer event on Thursday, May 7th, the upcoming National Day of Prayer. With all of my confusion noted above, that does not change the importance of prayer.... we are to "Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving" (Col. 4:2). Do pray on that date. Pray before and after that day. Pray today. Pray right now.
- Resurrection Lutheran Church in Gretna has invited us to a prayer event that day in their Fellowship Hall. They noted these times:
- Registration: 9-9:30 (Continental Breakfast)
- Program: 9:30-10:30 (Speakers & time for prayers)
- Pray!!!
