As we took communion, the message compared our union and communion with Christ. Ephesians teaches that every believer is already united to Christ by grace—our identity, acceptance, and standing before God are secure because we are "in Him," not because of our feelings (or even performance).  Communion, however, is the ongoing experience of fellowship with Christ, as He increasingly "dwells" in every area of our lives. Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3 is not that believers would become united with Christ but that they would grow in understanding and enjoying His immeasurable love. The Lord's Table is, therefore, a celebration of an accomplished reality, inviting us to deepen our fellowship with the One to whom we already belong. Because our union is secure, we can pursue ever-richer communion with confidence and joy.
